Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will expand to Athens, GA, home of the University of Georgia and one of the most historic cities in the state. “Like so many of our teams, this is a special team indeed and we are very pleased and proud to have them as a part of the ABA,” stated ABA co-founder Joe Newman. “The Athens Predators is owned and operated by Shawn Self, a Deaf native of Athens and a graduate from Gallaudet University, the only Deaf university in the world.”
Self brings his management and coaching skills to the ABA after three years of experience running the Southeast Hoopstars, an all Deaf basketball team for the Southeast Region. He also has nine years of experience coaching in high school and college. “Our mission is to bring the community together by giving back to the community and breaking barriors for people who are considered “incapable” of anything,” added Self. The ABA also features the ATX Warriors, another Deaf team, located in Austin TX. The Athens Predators will have tryouts on Feb 12, 2017 at East Athens Community Center.
